Why karate means empty hand? While they had taken many principles from the Chinese arts, these had been modified and fused with their own indigenous style which had truly evolved into pure Okinawan art. Thus, the kanji which symbolized the component ‘Kara’ was replaced by the one which translated as ‘Void’. So kara-te translates as “empty hand”.
